Shawish Market

Who are they?

Shawish Market is an Indigenize custom built platform similar to Etsy that empowers Indigenous entrepreneurs as we don’t charge any vendor fees. This initiative is part of their mission to remove economic barriers and foster sustainable growth within Indigenous communities. Shawish Market is unique not only in its fee structure but also in its vendor verification process.

They ensure that all products sold are authentic and directly benefit Indigenous communities. They incorporate Indigenous ways of knowing, such as listening to our elders and implementing a trade system. They currently have over 160 vendors, more than 700 items, and 12,000+ Instagram followers.

What projects might I work on?

The intern will support outreach, developing manuals, creating newsletters, and onboarding and supporting Indigenous vendors while also learning the skills of developing a marketing strategy. This role is crucial for expanding their reach and providing essential resources to their growing community of Indigenous artists.

What will working on projects look like?

Shawish Market is looking for a member of the team to complete some of the following tasks:

  • Update the vendor manual
  • Keep forms of documentation, such as privacy policy or terms and conditions, updated and current
  • Create videos on how to use the marketplace (can use the Scribe AI app)
  • Actively recruit new vendors
  • Assist prospective and current vendors with any questions they may have and help them set up their shop
  • Create and support with marketing strategy
  • Assist in the creation of social media images. Reach out to magazines, indigenous influencers, and others to spread knowledge of Shawish Marketplace
  • Manage a monthly newsletter and initiate or assist with grant writing

What could I expect to learn from this experience?

The intern will have the opportunity to build and execute their own marketing plans, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in the process. This trainee will not only learn from firsthand experience but also contribute to the growth and success of Shawish. They will play a key role in enhancing our communications and ensuring that our vendors receive the support they need to thrive. This position will be a stepping stone for someone passionate about marketing and community engagement, particularly within Indigenous entrepreneurship.

What skills are they looking for in a strong candidate?

An intern with Shawish Market should have experience in providing customer service through different platforms, such as online or over the phone, and great communication skills and a positive/friendly energy. They should be proficient in the use of computers and social media. They should be able to work independently as needed, have strong time management skills and a high level of attention to detail. The intern should also have experience in marketing, grant writing/obtaining grant skills, and knowledge of how online marketplaces function.

All ICI placements will be remote during IAP. Students will meet regularly with their cohort during the IAP period in a hybrid format. The range of programming is a mixture of didactics, hands-on learning experiences, active engagements with the community, and reflection opportunities.
