Learn more about Reclaim!
Who are they?
Grassroots Indigenous Multimedia (GIM) is a nonprofit organization established in 2000 by veteran tribal school teachers Mary Hermes (LCO Ojibwe community member) and Kevin Roach (Bad River Ojibwe) to aid in the efforts of the Ojibwe language revitalization movement through creating and distributing high quality indigenous language materials. Using tech in innovative ways, Grassroots Indigenous Multimedia aims to help close the gap between those who are trying to learn and the speakers of our indigenous languages.
What projects might I work on?
Interns will support refining the game in its current state. Based upon the student’s interests and technical abilities the Reclaim! team will work with the intern to identify a well-aligned workstream for their internship. Topics can include:
- User-engagement
- Unity programming
- 2D + 3D animation
- More!
What will working on projects look like?
- Standing meetings, developers will meet to scrub on mondays and work from a well defined list of bug reports Anangookwe.
- Playtesters will organize their work around both playtesting (replicate and document bugs) as well as organizing others for less extensive group testing.
- Initially playtest interns will develop a small “research” like plan in conjunction with Dr. Hermes and Anangookwe, in order to hone in on specific scenes or questions (some of content/understanding, some about bugs).
- Organize some other small group playtests with MIT students, or other groups.
- Group meetings with interns and staff to expand collaboration/enjoyment and to expose interns to the entire process of video game production.
What could I expect to learn from this experience?
Students will gain first hand experience developing an indie computer game, helping them to understand the constituent elements necessary to create such a game and bring it to market.
What skills are they looking for in a strong candidate?
- 2D and 3D digital asset creation
- Knowledge and comfort of GitHub and C#
- Experience working with Unity programming
Note: Applications for IAP 2026 will open on Monday, August 25th, and close on Friday, October 17th!
