PKG Boston Summer of Service

Summer 2024

Are you a changemaker planning on working in the Boston area next summer?

The new Boston Summer of Service program (formerly SILL) is open to undergraduate MIT students engaged in full-time PKG Social Impact Internships in the Boston area. All program participants will live together in MIT summer housing (arranged by PKG), enroll in the Experiential Ethics course, attend weekly reflection dinners/workshops led by PKG, and participate in direct service volunteering projects.

You will receive a stipend for the summer and the PKG Center will deduct the cost of MIT housing from the stipend.

Applications have closed for 2024, but check back for Summer 2025!

Who is eligible?

PKG’s Boston Summer of Service is open to all MIT undergraduate students engaged in PKG’s social impact summer internships in the Boston region.  Internships must be Boston or Cambridge based. Internships can be hybrid, but must have a regular in person schedule of at least once a week.

Program Requirements?

As a member of this social impact living learning community, you will also be required to enroll in the Experiential Ethics course, engage in weekly reflection dinners/workshops led by the PKG, and participate in direct service volunteering opportunities in the Boston region organized by PKG. Program requirements will also include reflection assignments throughout the summer and a final blog post about your experience.

Why should you apply?

You are interested in spending a summer in Boston/Cambridge engaged in social impact work and are planning to apply to a PKG Social Impact Internship. You are equally excited about living in community with other change-makers and the opportunity to reflect on your work this summer through the Experiential Ethics course, weekly dinners and direct service activities led by the PKG Center.

When should you apply?

The application period is from November 1 – December 8.

When are the program dates?

Summer 2024 (exact program dates TBD)

Will I be placed into an internship?

No. If accepted into the Boston Summer of Service program, the PKG Center will help guide your search for applicable internships, but you must still apply and be accepted into a PKG social impact internship. We highly suggest that you already begin applying to PKG social impact summer internships that can be found on Handshake. If you have an offer from an organization that is not a PKG social impact internship, we may still be able to offer you a place in the Boston Summer of Service program.

Where will I live?

You will live together with the Boston Summer of Service cohort in MIT summer housing that is arranged by PKG.

Is funding available?

You will receive a stipend for the summer and the PKG Center will deduct the cost of MIT housing from the stipend. You will also receive a monthly MBTA pass for use on MBTA buses and subway lines.
